I have an 05 1500 4.7 6spd and lately it has been overheating every now and then. Since I have owned the truck the temp. gauge sits at half way. The only things i have done to the truck is custom slp exhaust and CAI. The temp gauge never gets maxed out but sits 3/4 of the way and will sit there for a while then slowly go down then go up again later. This really happened on my trip to vermont, which is a 6 hour trip for me, and it was reading warmer than normal for more than half of the trip. I am just if anyone has any input, because i want to get it fixed before something else starts going. Thanks again!

 

is your rad gummed up with bugs or other debris?

 

There are more than a few threads here of 4.7's and over heating issues. Do some looking around and read those as they will keep you busy for a while. I hope your issue is nothing too serious

 

so i finally got it into the shop for overheating, and they could not find a single thing wrong. I had them change the thermostat, but still over heating. They drove it around for awhile but still no overheating for them. I really want to get this issue solved so i can take my truck to Carlisle for the Truck show this weekend. The shop said it was def. not the head gasket. Anyone have any random ideas on this thought? Thanks

 

You need to take care of this, as 'Weed stated, the 4.7s do not take kindly to overheating. Good, reliable engine, but is VERY PRONE to head gasket and head problems when allowed to over-heat!

I'd be thinking gunk in the radiator after changing the thermostat made no difference. These stock radiators are not of the highest quality out there and radiator fluid gets VERY corrosive when it gets some age on it...

 

Yeah, if they are SURE it is not the head gaskets and have changed the stat then all you have left is are the hoses, water pump, rad and rad cap.

 

Don't forget the temp sensor in the block also.I changed everything (t-stat,hoses,waterpump,cap and even the radiator)It didn't make a difference.So, on a whim I changed the temp sensor in the block.and TA-DA! no more overheating problems.

 

Do you have anything mounted in front of your grille, similar to what HammerZ71 has on his big-red? Must not over look the air deflection factor on higher speeds and not getting the incoming ram air how it was DESIGNED.

Double ck the coolant ratio, not too much or too little for your area.

That's why Hammer has a Flex-a-Lite efan that pulls 3300 cfm and a 180* thermostat. My engine stays as cool as the under side of a pillow!!!

 

First thing I would be doing is a cooling system flush. Is the water pump leaking? It may be going out and not circulating the coolant
