Default 4x4 and gears question???

do i have to change both front and back? or can i just put 4.56 on the rear? 90% percent of my driving is on 2wheel drive. oh and my 02 5.9 has the 9.25 on the rear, right? (sorry about the newb question)

Well you can do just the rear but if you engage 4x4 chit will be pucked hard. IMO if you are cannot afford to do both then just wait to have it done right. If you really want it done then you can do the rear and completely remove the front drive shaft to prevent accidental engagement. IMO wait to do both.

thanks for the reply, i have actually been thinking of removing the front sys. oh and i know it will very a lot but just to give me an idea, how much would it cost to have someone (professional/mechanic) to do the swap? $200 range? $300 range? $400 range?

if you only do only the rear, disconnect the driveshaft, pull the 4x4 fuse, and put a thumb-tack on the selector.

you can expect $300-$400 per axle

and yes, you have the 9.25 rear end

You can in fact just do the rear one and leave the front alone. Just remember to have the guy in the flatbed go back and pick up your shredded transfer case and transmission from off the road after he loads up your truck...

Seriously, the only way to cheap out and not do the front would be as AF has suggested...
