Default 2003 Dodge ram Automatic Issue

I just got a 2003 ram 1500 quad cab short bed 5.7 L hemi. I have had the truck for about a week, before i started noticing this issue. When i go to put the truck into park, the shifter will slide all the way up to park, but the Dash light for park will not light up, and the truck will stay in neutral. On occasion i also have the shifter in the reverse position, but the dash says its in neutral. It is intermittant, and seems to only happen once every few days, but it takes forever to get it into park.

I have a feeling its an issue with the linkage between the shift and the tranny, but any help with it would be great, as i am supposed to Be taking a road trip in a few weeks. It doesnt happen all the time, and i dont want to be stuck out of state with a truck that i cant lock up at night.

I have a 2006 Ram 2500 Quad with a similar situation. When shifting into park the truck will not indicate P. Unless the truck rolls slightly forward. Does anyone know if the cable or switch is adjustable? (Not a good feeling getting into the truck to respond to a fire call and the truck won't start.)

The positioning of the display is electronically controlled from within the trans. Im not sure exactly where off hand though. I would have to go through the manuals.

Well sorry about not posting this sooner but what had happened was the clips holding the cable from the shift **** to the transmission had either come loose or had broken off. 95$ later, and almost 1000 miles afterwards and no issues yet...

Yeah i know i put a bit of miles on...
