Hello!

I'm in a dispute with my Dodge stealer regarding the replacement of the steering shaft in the 2006 3500 RAM MegaCab I recently purchased.

A clunk in the front end has been identified by the shop foreman as the intermediate shaft splines making 'noise' through into the steering wheel. It's not audible, but it is detectable.

There's TSBs on Durangos, etc https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...ing-shaft.html, and I'm wondering if there's anything for my truck.

The stealer is saying this is normal on the heavy duty trucks and is part of it being a used vehicle. Of course I'm calling BS. They refuse to replace it under my Gold Star extended warranty.

Can anyone give me some direction?

Is it easy to replace myself if all else fails?

Hiya; I know the exact sound and feel your talking about. My 1500 QCRB has a clunking when steering side to side or when moving the wheel left to right. The intermediate seems to have some ovaling in it. You can see the universal moving before the intermediate and the pin through it moving independantly of the two. It really makes the steering feel loose and sloppy. I've read this was a problem in the earlier gens but not so much in the 3'rds. Let me know if you get any resolve for your problem and I 'll do the same. Hoping to get it in this week for a look at by an out of town dealer that i goto.

You have the right to have a regional service rep called in to settle any disputes with the dealership over warranty issues. You may want to use it...


If you find that you do have to do it yourself or pay a shop to do it, I'd suggest purchasing a Borgeson shaft. They can be found for around $250. Borgesons are machined from a solid steel billet, not a cheap stamping like the OEM.
