Default Leather Steering Wheel repair?

Found an old post talking about the issues with the leather-wrap wheel. My 2005 is rough and discolored across the entire top of the wheel. Combination of my skin (I can't wear a leather watchband) and a mechanic with rear-end fluid on his hands.

Tried to clean it off - BIG mistake... made it even worse.

Short of replacing the entire wheel, has anyone ever replaced the cover?

I do not want a cover over top of the wheel. I would like to get it back to original if possible.

Any realworld experince with fixing this would be appreciated.

It is cheaper to buy a replacement on ebay in most cases than to take it to a shop and have it re-wrapped.

I used shoe polish (black steering wheel) on an old truck...was more of a temporary fix but worked for a while. After that I just put a leather cover over it....

There's a guy on ebay that sells interesting wheel replacements. Looks like wood, silver, etc (just the rim portion). Bit pricey though.
