Default would these look too small

so i went to place my order for wheels and tires, and there is back order for 295 70 17 nitto trail grapplers, i was going to get the 295 70 18, but those for some reason are a 35" tire and would not fit, so the guy at the tire shop said he could get the trail grapplers in 285 65 18, would those look to small?

with a level the 35's would fit (with a bit of rub off roading, great if your just going for the look and not full travel), so are you wanting a 17" rim or 18" i;m confused

i dont want to crank the torsion bars, my friend did it and his truck is horrribly stiff, i would like to keep the stock height

the 295 70 17 are 33's but with the 18" wheel, makes them 35" for some reason

i want the 17, but the trail grappler is on back order in 295 70 17,
the 295 70 18 are to big, so my other option is 285 65 18

That doesn't make much sense, the wheel size shouldn't really affect the tire height, if it's a 265/75/16 or 265/75/20 the tire should be about the same height... def. not off by a full two tire sizes!

No they are not the same height.

Here is how you tire sizes work:

1. take the first number (the width in millimeters) and divide by 25.4, this give you the width in inches

2. multiply be the second number (aspect ratio) divide by 100 (percentage), this gives you the sidewall height

3. multiply by 2, the add the 3rd number (wheel diameter)

Example: 275/60 R20 (factory 20" Ram tires)

1. 275/25.4= 10.82677 inches

2. 10.82677*60/100 or 10.82677/.6 = 6.496 inches

3. 6.496*2 = 12.992 + 20 = 32.992 = 33" tire height.

285 65 18 will have a height of about 32.6"
295 70 17 will have a height of about 33.26"
295 70 18 will have a height of about 34.26"

Those are going to be close, the formula can be off by up to half an inch based on manufacturing tolerances and wheel width can have an affect as well.

Buying 18" wheels will add $500-$800 to the cost. Why not wait for the backorder?

The 18 and 17 inch wheels are almost the same price. I'm just want to know if the 285 65 18 will look to small the guy at the tire shop said he tried to put on 295 70 18 on a stock 4x4 dodge and it didn't fit. I could wair for the back order but I'm not sure how long that will be
