Replace the PCM. As the name of the fault implies , this is an internal pcm fault . There are no other known causes of this fault other than a defective pcm.

Unfortunately I have to agree. Replacing the PCM is about the only way. There are a few threads on it here on the board if you care to search using "P0601" as the keyword or you can also google it.

There are sites that sell reman-ed PCMs though at a fraction of the cost.

I'm a second gen owner but the fix is the same. I just fixed this about two or three weeks ago. I live in jersey and the smog is strict here to say the least. What ever you do do not go to the dealership for this. First you can not reprogram yourself out of this one. P0601 is a Check Sum error. This mean that there is a general fault in the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). I paid around $250 and bought a new one from AllComputerResources.com. They will ask you for your VIN # and mileage. Also send them as much info as possible like the S/N and P/N off on your current PCM. Oh and the most important thing is when you replace the old with the new make sure you disconnect the negative battery terminal and reconnect it after the new one is in place.

hope this helps

Discharge,(shock yourself on grounded metal) ALL static electricity first. I ruined a computer for my LAST ford escort wagon with one small static shock to it. Drought a couple years ago. Very dry out.
