Default Best place for new engine??

Well, after 122,000 miles it's time to start looking for a new engine. Can you get a crate 4.7 engine from Dodge or only remans? Thanks guys!

What year? Just as an example, you can get an 03-04 short block from moparonlineparts.com for $2024.00 p/n 5101957AB ($2935.00 dealer price).

Sorry! It's a 2002. Not really having any issues yet, just getting ready. Seems like it would be getting wore out and down on compression starting around now. Would a 2003 block work? Thanks......

I didn't think there would be a difference, but the 2002 parts man shows this: 5083963AA, which comes up on that same site for $1236.25 (1795.00) dealer cost. Right below that in the parts manual it shows a part number for a remanned long block which is a bit more pricey $3910 with an 800 core charge. I'd try to find a good used one, but that's me personally (the gov't doesn't pay me enough to get something that $$ new). In actuality, 122,000 miles on a modern engine isn't that bad. I have 109,000+ on my 03 hemi and you wouldn't know it to drive it. If it isn't breaking or showing symptoms, don't automatically assume it's time to replace it based on mileage alone. If you start having problems, burning lots of oil, etc, then there's a good reason. But it's your truck, your $$ and ultimately your decision.

If you are mechanically inclined I would be building my own and saving a lot of money

Even if he is, at some point there has to be a machine shop involved unless he has access to all that stuff (some of us aren't so fortunate).

But even then that still saves a ton of money. You can get the shop to bore it out, shaved the heads and do the valve job and turn the crank if needed. Complete disassembly, re-assembly and installation is what cost the most.

I don't know about that, some places I've seen bend you over for the actual machine work. Me personally I'd rather do it myself (my last engine was a 440 and it was fun). I do everything myself unless I don't have the tools or ability.

If I was going this far with a 4.7, I would start collecting some other parts for it in preparation for getting a new short/long block, like 08 intake, TB adapter, cams, etc. It won't quite be the 310hp the 08+ 4.7 is, but it wouldn't be far behind it.
