Default high rpms and overheating problem

ok so today i started my truck and i noticed that the rpm are a little high at about 800-850. i leave work and drive home but i got to stop at the bank and now im waiting in drivethru with it in park and its hitting 1100 rpm steady. my temp got a little over 3/4 of the way but the moment i started to drive the temp went down fast. i had a lot of work done to this truck as something is always going wrong. before i forget its a 2002 4.7 1500 4x4 with 153,000 miles about a year ago to now i had the head gaskets changed, rear, trans, waterpump and radiator. some help would be great. this truck is going to kill me me

When you were driving did your temp continue to get hotter then all of a sudden it would show it cooling down and keep sysling like that? As for your RPM issue i wonder if it your throttle position sensor that is giving you the grief.

it seemed the moment i started driving it was cooling down and as far as the tps i replaced that about a year ago when i cleaned the tb roughly 40000-50000 miles. i guess it could be shot but the cooling seems strange. update on the cooling i noticed it only rises high when its idling at 1100 and my tstat is a jet 180 it seems like the truck is surging

i would guess you might need a new t-stat. my truck used to heat up like that and not get all the way hot then finally open up and cool right down past running temp. took the t-stat apart and it came out in a couple pieces. i don't know whats with the t-stats in these trucks because i have heard that from other people. they should stick open to prevent over heating.

Well it could also be your water pump is going. When your idling your not pushing as much water because your fins are gone. When you hit the gas it speeds it up enough that it pushes faster and harder and bam-o it cools your engine down quick.
