yep regular maintenance including oil changes is the only way to prevent it

you could always do a Hot-Oil Flush Its proven cleaning method which is used worldwide. It gives hydraulic and/or lubrication oil systems a clean start and removes assembly debris. Hot oil circulates through (pipe) systems at high turbulent velocity. Loose or dislodged soil is entrained in the oil and filtered.

My dad got it done at the dodge dealer and i got to see what they flushed out and it was pretty nasty he has a 2007 dakota with 32 000Km (20 000 miles) on it
i should mention that the dealer did it for free so no telling if its worth the extra money or not

Regular oil changes will also prolong timing chain life!

Ive never heard of timing chain issues but there are lots of threads here of 4.7's with over heating issues.

The timing chains are not really an issue with these engines, and most never see a new timing set in their life span.

But the fact is, as with any engine, dirty or broken down oil will not lube the chain and guides as well and could cause premature failure.

There is another way to prevent it. Auto-rx is a good additive you can use to clean your engine. You can use the cleaning procedure or add about 3oz per oil change. See auto-rx.com. I use it on all my vehicles.

Another is pennzoil ultra. I know this sounds like marketing but they just came out with this oil a few months ago and it's literally supposed to clean your engine as you drive bringing it back to "factory clean". They say it's better than their own pennzoil platinum.
