Default AC Compressor Bearing gone?

2003 dodge Ram 1500
4.7 litre

The AC works great, Truck runs great. The pulley on the Compressor is making a whining noise when not having the ac on, I am assuming that the bearings are shot? So i called around and the clutch kit is 470 bucks, I can get a new compresor for 380.

My question is...............Is there any way around that AC pulley for the winter?

are you sure its your a/c compressor and not an alternator or idler pulley?
does the pitch change with a/c off and on?

There are one or two threads where guys have taken off the AC compressor altogether and used a shorter belt. Look around and see if you can find then threads.
