You've got to think about the intake first. Is it strong enough to take the boost. Secondly, what about tuning. Third is the piping and bracketry to get it to work. Most importantly, why did he take it off in the first place? I'd definitely go with a prefab kit as it has everything there already made and tested. Why risk messing up your truck with a piece-meal, parts bin, cobbled together system?
Which Paxton model? If it is the older ball-drive and not the new Novi gear-drive, forget it. You cannot get more than 4 or 5 pounds of boost in most situations. We've done about 15#'s consistently with the Novi on a 304ci V/8. Now, if Paxton doesn't make an application (read complete kit) for your truck, you are in the custom fab ballpark... I've been there and it is LOTS of work in the best of circumstance (experienced modders/engineers).
However, the mechanics are the easy part. The real issues start when one gets on the dyno and starts tuning. I'm not familiar with tuning options for the Ram, just other contemporary computer-controlled products. THIS IS CRITICAL!!! Too, lean and you'll be lucky to just "burn" a piston. If unlucky, you'll melt several. Getting plenty of fuel to the engine under boost is the name of the game. The fact that some vendors who offer boosted options for the Ram use a "nineth" injector tells me that it is not easy to deal with the Chrysler electronics/computer. For example, the best way to deal with this is to use appropriately sized larger injectors with appropriate duty-cycle for the application, such as is done with GM and Ford tuning systems (both of which I have experience).
Bottom line? There is no cheap way to supercharge much of anything and once you get away from a "kit" of some kind the potential problems increase exponentially. Trust me on this, I've been there, the custom fab route--more times than I care to remember (Some just never seem to learn).
If the Ram I have on order ever arrives and I consider going with forced-inductions, I will opt for the Kenne Bell (of the limited choices available). I've a KB on another car and am happier with it than I've ever been with Paxtons or Vortechs. Yes, I've considerable experience with turbos, too. All the best.
