Default Auto locking with engine running?

My 04 dodge ram hemi pick up keeps locking me out if I leave it run and close the doors.
Not sure how long it takes but, Nothing is more embarrassing than having your keys in the truck running and you are locked out! What is the fix for this. Please and thanks for a reply.

If you check the manual, there may be a way for you to "program" it not to do this. You can probably turn that feature off.

IMO, you should always have a spare key handy anyway, just in case.

I will move this over to the 3rd gen section (2002-2008 Rams), get you some additional help.

In some states it is illegal to leave the vehicle running while no one is in it. It leaves them open to theft. Why not just leave the door cracked open enough to where it doesnt latch? You obviously are not worried about it possibly getting stolen so what it is the difference in leaving the door cracked?

Or do as stated above and change the programming. But I think to do so you need a EVIC in the OHD on the ceiling.

Strange - none of my vehicles will lock with the key in the ignition, running or not.

Do you have an aftermarket alarm? I had an intrepid that had a valet alarm that would autolock the doors after 20 secs or so after you exited the vehicle ,running or not, had to turn that setting off.

A few thoughts on the cause as it will only auto lock when above 15 mph.

- Aftermarket alarm x2
- Faulty door lock switch
- Do you have keyless entry option (RKE) ?
Is it possable that your hitting a button on the remote when you start the truck or that the remote is faulty and is randomly sending out a lock command ?
- Faulty instrument cluster

From the 2004 Service manual

AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCKS

When the automatic door locks are ENABLED the
door locks will lock when the vehicle is moving at
about 25.7 Km/h (15 mph), all doors are closed and
the accelerator pedal is depressed. This feature can
be switched ON or OFF as desired. When the system
is DISABLED the door locks will operate normally,
but will not lock automatically when the vehicle is
rolling. Once the automatic door locks have been
actuated, they will not try to lock the doors again
until a door is opened.

DOOR LOCK INHIBIT

If the key is in the ignition, in any position, and
either front door is ajar, the doors can not be locked,
but the unlock function still operates. Pressing the
RKE lock/unlock button under these conditions will
result in a normal lock/unlock activation.
After the key is removed from the ignition switch,
or the doors are closed, the power door locks will
operate normally.
