Default Ram 1500 rims

Got a question about some rims for my Ram 1500 and a friend said this was the place to go.

I am wanting to get some 16-17" rims for my truck. It currently has 20"(big horn edition). Problem with the 20's is that it is difficult to find good offroad/winter tires for them. Another problem is that the inner part of the rim is very wide and flat. Whenever I drive in deep snow I have to get out and clean the snow from inside the rims before heading down the highway or the balance is way off.

I want to get some 16" or 17" rims to open up my tire selection. I don't need anything fancy, plain steel would be fine with me. They would only be on during the winter then I would put the 20's back on for the rest of the year.

My problem is I don't know anything about rims or what to look for(bolt pattern, width, etc.).

Anybody out there help me out?

Thanks,

BD

Welcome to DF. I will move this to the 3nd generation Ram section (2002-2008 Dodge Rams).

16" is not standard on 3rd gen so you need 17". Rims are 17"x8" or x8.5" or x9". Bolt pattern is 5x5.5" or 5x139.7. Tires are 265/70R17. Check tirerack.com

Craigslist would be a good place to check. You might be able to find someone who would trade wheels.

17" is the smallest that will clear the caliper. Short of finding a deal on used wheels, you can pick up a new set of Crager Soft 8s in black for about $70 each. Hell, I think the chrome version is still under $100 a piece. I believe Summit has a deal on shipping a set of four for around $20 as well.
It's been a good, solid, dependable, strong steel wheel that's been around since the '70s...

Ok,

I checked Summit Racing's website and found these:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CRR-3428855/

and these

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CRR-3978855/

I am fine with the black, I kind of like the look anyway. I am more interested in function as I do a fair amount of offroad driving in the winter and what I have now just doesn't work for me.

I am assuming these are a drop in replacement for the 20's currently on my truck and 265/70R17 should fit these rims as well.

Anything look incorrect?

If not I'll probably order these right away since we just got another 10-12" of snow today.

One Question, it says center caps are not included, is this a problem?

Thanks guys,

BD

Yep, either one will work on your truck (5 on 5.5" bolt pattern) and the 8" rim width is fine for a 265/70r17 tire. The 4.5" backspacing will also give you a little bit wider stance too (pull the tires out from under the wheel well slightly) which is never a bad thing...

yea those soft 8s are a pretty good looking rim, cheap, and the offset helps out a little bit with the looks/width of tires. I think its probably your best bet! And the black ones wouldnt be near as much upkeep as the chromies

Dont forget about how popular your 20s are. You can probably sell them for a pretty good profit, cover the new rims and some of the new tires

Can anyone tell me what the backspacing is on my 20's?

If you're looking for just some winter rims then get on Craigslist and look for the stock 17" steel rims that came with some of the 3rd gens.

This is what they look like
http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...:1&um=1&itbs=1

Around hree they go for $200-250ish for the set. I've seen cheaper
But if you're up for buying new then those soft 8's are the way to go...
