2005 Ram Wheel/tire
Hello,
I have a 2005 Ram with the standard clad 20" wheels and 275/60 R20 tires. I was looking to get the 17" wheels in the hopes that I could get a bigger tire? what it the largest tire I can put on a 17" wheel and still fit on my truck? I do have air bags to lift rear and will be getting torsion bar keys to lift the front 1.5-2". thanks for all your help.

Its all about Aspect Ratio my friend.
A larger tire may be more affordable in the 17'' size but after buying 17'' rims you'll be out more money.
The smaller rim size wont allow you to put a bigger tire on (it may have more rubber but the o.s diameter will still have the same limit)
If its 4x4 and youre gonne level it... YOu can probably fit a 305/60r17 on there without any problems... You may even be able to go bigger. Dont forget the first number (eg.275 or 305) is how wide the tire is in MM. The second number (eg 55 or 60 or 65)... Is the percentage of the width the tire is in height... Confusing i know. So say its 275/60 ... your tire height would be 60% of the 275mm from where the tire meets the rim (if i remember correctly)...
Use a tire size calculator such as this one ---: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
That will help you keep your ratio in check... Dont forget larger/smaller height tires will throw off your speedometer.

I'm assuming since you said you are adding keys that you have a 4x4.
In that case, you COULD fit 35x12.5x17s with a proper backspaced wheel. However 35" tires don't give you much room for any flex. With a level I'd go 33x12.5x17, this will give a fairly full look in the wheel well and good room for flex if you go off-road or have a load in the bed.
Tire diameter is tire diameter, there would be no difference what you can fit whether you have a 20" wheel or a 17" wheel. However, you'll have a good many advantages if you off-road with a 17" wheel. Not to mention 17" tires cost WAY less than 20" tires of the same diameter...
