I have an 04 ram 1500 and recently when I accelerate a winding noise grows louder and louder. Also when I accelerate, my lights become brighter. When at idle, the battery gauge seems to move back and forth. Is this a problem with the alternator? I have also heard that it could be a problem with the regulator on my alternator. Any ideas on where I should start or what it could be? Thanks.

Sounds like the alternator to me. If you have an Autozone or Advance Auto Parts near you, the can test it for free.

 

BOOT LEG WAY TO TEST IT IS TO START YOUR TRUCK THEN TAKE OFF THE BATTERY CABLES. IT THE TRUCK TURNS OFF THEN YOU HAVE ALT. PROBLEMS THIS IS ALSO A BOOTLEG TO TEST BATTERY IF IT RUNS WHEN YOU HAVE A DEAD CELL IN YOUR BATTERY AND CANT CHARGE. BUT BEFORE YOU BUY THE NEW ALT. GET THEM TO CHECK IT. THIS IS NOT FOOL PROF BUT HAS WORKED FOR ME. NOTE IF YOU HAVE TWO RED WIRES YOU WILL NEED TO KEEP THEM TOUCHING OR IT WILL CUT OFF AND GIVE YOU A FALSE SINCE THAT ITS YOUR ALT. HAVE FUN. HOPE THIS HELPS.

 

Let a shop test it as indicated. Letting the engine run and disconnecting the cables doesnt work like in older cars.
