Steering Shaft/Gearbox Play
Hello All,
I am new to this site and have lots of questions but going to get things started off with this 1!!!
I have an 05 1500 Shortbox Reg. Cab 2WD with the 20" rims. When I first bought the truck it handled great , now after 2.5 years , it started to ride like a tank! I recently replaced the rear shocks with just the basic monroe sensa-trac's and that seems to have made a difference in the rear. The front however , seems like I feel every little tiny bump and major bump in the road and i get bounced. I replaced the front shocks last summer with a set of ranchos but it didnt seem to make much of a difference. I was wondering if having the ranchos in the front may be too heavy duty of a shock and if i should just switch them with the monroe sensa-tracs like i have in the rear..also I am considering putting a 2/4 drop in the truck so was wondering how this would effect the ride quality?
#2!
I have noticed the truck likes to wander depending on road conditions. Nice flat smooth road it will drive straight. Rough road it will dip and wander with the low spots in the pavement. I have noticed that if i turn the wheel slightly i can feel a little bit of play in it(just a small amount) In the summer when i was turning into a tight parking stall I heard a "clunk" from the front end a couple times but it hasnt done it since. I jacked up the front of the truck and with the help of a friend shook the tires and didnt feel any play in the tires but noticed the u-joint on the steering shaft had some play in it. I was wondering if this is a common problem and how much it would be to replace this? also if this has a big impact on handling? I don't know how much play that shaft is supposed to have going into the gearbox or not...I would also like to check the balljoints/tie rod ends to see maybe if these compononents are wore out maybe thats why I have a rough ride.
