Default a few 4wd questions...

Forgive me if these have been covered, couldn't find 'em. I was looking through my manual today and noticed two things;

1.the "auto" option: i have the 4x4 **** with 2wd, 4x4 lock and 4x4 low options. in the manual they show another **** with an extra option for automatic four wheel drive selection. Do any of you guys have this option? It would come in handy here where some streets are plowed dry while others remain under a foot of snow :P. Now, is this just a sensor or computer related thing or is the transfer case completely different? could i install the automatic 4x4 option myself?

2. smaller question; do i really need to shift into neutral each time i select 4x4 lock? in the manual this is the preferred method. i always stop the truck and switch while still in drive, haven't had any issues. am i destroying it?

thanks in advance for the help!

I have the same setup as you do. Transferring **** to 4Lock does not require neutral and you also do not need to stop, moreover you could do this at speed (don't remember the limitation on speed but it is around 60km/h). If you want to use 4Low you will need to use neutral otherwise it won't work.
