Default Got a problem

Hey guys so I got a problem. My gas Gauge is being all screwy, it will say I'm at half a tank then drop to empty and stay like that for a while and go back to normal or a 1/8 of a tank less than normal, as well the engine light comes on.

Now this happened to me first a couple of months ago and I fixed it by filling up the tank. But why does it get all screwy and sometimes it'll say it empty for days so I don't know exactly how much gas I got.

Some one please tell me why it's doing that, thank you
Oh and by the way it's about about -20C here if that helps

My 05 Chevy cavalier did that the float in the tank was broke. Not sure what was done to fix it was under warranty. My best guess is replace the fuel sending unit or see if you can swap floats.

Probably your sending unit.

Agreed, sounds like the float in the tank stuck at times. It is built into the fuel pump though and has to be replaced as a unit. I have one out in the shop if you are interested.
