Looking for a bigger oil filter for a 2002 4.7. Anyone using one and have parts #?

 

I think my data is correct ... HOWEVER ... please check the fit and keep your reciepts ... just in case!

My lists are for Amsoil filters and cross reference to Fram filters. You can take these part numbers to your local parts store and they should be able to match them up. All dimensions are the same except for the height.

The stock filter for the 2002 4.7L is ...

EAO43 is 3.09 high ...FRAM PH7328

EAO40 is 4.05 high ...FRAM PH43

EAO15 is 5.276 high ... Fram PH8A is 5.14 high

The above Fram filters are for the Extra Guard filters. Fram oil filters come as Extra Guard, Tough Guard and Extended Guard. If I were to use a Fram filter, I would choose the Extended Guard Filter. Good for 10,000 miles with Amsoil Synthetic Oil.

 

Yes, Xg16 is what I have been using and have been reading all night that the XG8A is the same but longer and is the same as the ph8A. I used to use the stock size Amsoil maybe I will go back to using one of those. So then on to another question, when it says the oil filter is good for 10,000 miles what does that actually mean in terms of changing oil? Is that just for filter?

 

I would not go that long with a conventional 'dino-oil'. RTFM! Your owner’s manual will explain when you should change the oil. Most vehicles can go as long as 7,500 with dino-oil under 'normal' driving conditions. Severe driving conditions are different. If you do a lot of stop-n-go type city driving, haul a trailer, carry heavy loads or do a lot of off-road driving, I would stick to 3,500 intervals. If you decide to go with a good synthetic oil and use a good quality filter, you can go to 10,000. I use the Amsoil Oil Analysis Program. I now change my filter every 10,000 and send a sample in for analysis at that point. At the 20,000 point, I change the filter AND the oil and send a sample in. I change my oil every 20,000 miles only because I use the Oil Analysis Program. The report normally says to “…change the filter and continue usage.” The military, city bus fleets and large trucking fleets use oil analysis programs to tell them when to change their oil. (20,000 is easy to keep track of on your odometer. 20, 40, 60, etc…) Just extend or shorten one of your changes to match up your odometer.

How did I get there? When I bought my used truck, it had a fresh oil change from the dealership. The truck had 75,000 on it. I drove it to the 3,000 point and took a sample to send in. Then I added Amsoil Engine Flush and let it IDLE for about 15 minutes to dissolve any sludge and clean out any other oil deposits in the oil pathways. Drain the oil and give it some extra drain time. Install the new filter. Pour in the Amsoil 5w30.

Since the truck is ‘new’ to me, I plan to take a sample at 5,000, 10,000 (change filter here) and 15,000 to establish a baseline for future oil changes. Each test kit might cost $31.00, but an oil change using synthetic oil at $9.55 per quart with filter will cost $85.15! If I were to change my oil and filter every 5,000, I would spend $66.85 for oil plus $18.30 for the filter for a total of $85.15 per change! So, at 5k, 10k and 15k that comes to $255.45 before TAX! Why change your oil if it still tests good!?! You cannot tell by color or smell.

That's what I was wondering. So I could probably with synthetic oil and xg filter change my oil every 5000 but change filter at 10000. Sounds like a safe bet to me. I always change every 5000.

 

Every 5,000! Really! WOW! Wish I had your kind of money. At $85 for an oil change, I'de rather pocket the money and spend it on something else, but that's just me. My old totaled 2000 Dakota had over 150,000 miles and never used a drop of oil! I changed it every 20,000. I did the same with my wife's Nissan Sentra SpecV. The only problem she has had with her car is that it gets BETTER MPG than it is supposed to! Well ... maybe you drive it hard and put it away wet? Just messin with ya! Anyway, as I stated in my previous post, "Why change your oil if it's still good?!?" The Amsoil motto is "Change your thinking, not your oil." BTW ... Amsoil has never had a damage claim made against them for their extended oil change policy. Amsoil is the First US made synthetic oil that was approved by ANSI for use in automobiles. 1972!

 

I was talking every 5000 if I use Frame xg8a filter with synthetic oil. I only mentioned maybe I should go back to amsiol because I use to use it. I don't think I want to go through the hassle of sending oil back to be tested.
