Default Plenum gasket ??

So I started reading a lot of threads about the plenum intake gasket. I noticed a lot of symptoms are pinging under acceleration and heavy oil consumption. My truck (187,000 miles) barely gets a quart low between oil changes (4,000 with Shell Rotella) but I do have a faint pinging / ticking noise that only happens on heavy acceleration at highway speeds. Replacing the intake looks like quite an undertaking and I just finished replacing my water pump and that was a big PITA.
Could a bad plenum cause just pinging but no oil consumption?plenum

I guess the first question would be what year and engine do you have? I replaced the intake on my 03 4.7 and it wasn't difficult. It was a little time consuming.

It wouldn't matter, ALL Magnum series 5.2s/5.9s have the issue.

Yes, if the gasket is not completely blown out yet, there could be a loss of power with minimal oil loss.

Best way I know of to check for it is to remove the air filter, open the TB and look down it. You'll need a flashlight. If there is any standing oil or an oily film visible, it's plenum time.

It's a flaw that Daimler-Chrysler should have addressed and fixed, rather than band-aided by de-tuning the engine to simply try to buy time till it got out of warranty (thanks, Mercedes!), but once fixed PROPERLY, it's seldom an issue and when you get rid of the "Death Flash" that DC tuned on it to limit the thing, it's like having a brand new truck. This engine is a work-horse, will NEVER get good fuel economy, but with just decent care, they tend to last a VERY long time. Hearing of one with 300,000 miles on it is not uncommon...

here you go budd, this will "PERMANANTLY" fix the problem

http://www.hughesengines.com/Index/p...p?partid=26190

Here is the bottom of the stock intake manifold, those bolts hold down a super thin/weak plate which doesn't sit right because of how flimsy it is causing the gasket to deteriorate or come loose. thus giving you pinging, oil consumption, and power loss.

2002 1500 5.9L

Yeah I followed a few posts to the Hughes parts. Certainly looks like a big job for me and my un-organized and poorly stocked garage. I might have to recruit one of my buddies for help doing that. Doesn't look very complex, but I agree with time consuming. I'll try and take the T.B. next week on my day off and take a look inside. Thanks guys.

it's time consuming yes but not something that's overly difficult if you're good with a wrench and have some common sense..

and hammer is right on with the death flash.. What a stupid idea.
