Default oil recomendations

The manual states 5w20or30 oil for my 5.7 hemi. The dealer put 10w-30 in it instead. Will there be a problem travelling long distances on the hyway. Should I replace the oil with the proper reccomended oil before I go on this trip? Will it affect the performance of the engine at all for towing ?
Curious!!!!!!

As long as it isn't freezing out side you'll be okay. I'd ask for 5w/30 next time, though. FWIW all of our pre 05 Hemi's use 5w/30 or 10w/30 with the 5w/30 being "recommended" per the manual.

It shouldn't hurt the mileage at all.

I am currently going through some major engine work due to 10W30 oil. I live in North Florida and bought my 03QC Laramie new. I changed the oil every 3500-5000 miles without fail. Just recently I had a "burp" in my oil pressure so I took it in to have it looked at. I have 70K miles on this truck. My trustwothy mechanic just informed me that there was excessive sludge build up in the engine. A test on the oil fortunately revealed no metallics in it. Therefore I caught the problem before it got worse. He stated that a mere flush would not do the trick. Needless to say, this is going to cost me $1200.00. I usually used Jiffy Lube or Tires Plus for my oil changes, but apparently they use low grade crap oil. Now I must find a place that uses Castrol or change it myself.

Default RE: oil recomendations

There are countless "what oil should I use" threads, but I still have some questions. From what I understand, here are the oil recommendations for each:

'02 Hemi: 5w30 (no MDS)
'03 Hemi: 5w30 (no MDS)
'04 Hemi: 5w30 (no MDS)
'05 Hemi: 5w20 (no MDS)
'06 Hemi: 5w20 (MDS standard)

There is a service bulletin that states that 5w20 oil is required for the MDS to run properly on the '06 Hemi. My question is, why is 5w20 recommended for the '05 Hemi? What changes were made to the powertrain design of an '05 to require a thinner oil? Did the engineers decide that 5w20 is a better oil for Hemi regardless of whether it is MDS-equipped or not, and does it really matter if an '05 Hemi uses 5w30 or 5w20?
