Unhappy PS pump shaft leak?!?!?

I had to replace my PS pump and it went really well. The install went really smoothly and worked great for a couple of days, until... I sprung a major leak from the pump shaft!

Does anyone know off hand how this can happen, other then a manufacturering error?

And yes i used a pulley puller and installer set made by KD Tools. So it is not like i was hammering on it.

Thanks,

A new pump shouldn't do that....

However, the little nipple inside the cap needs to he ground off for property venting.

Remove cap and disassemble it. Gently Pry the center out. Theirs a little 'button' of plastic that needs to be ground flush.

Lordco did an exchange and I installed the new pump last night... so far so good.
Total for the fix (new pump, with a new drip pan, the pully puller and installer kit, and 3 quarts of ATF+4(EDIT: only really needed one quart) just under $200. Pretty fast and easy fix.

This little "button" of plastic, is this sealing the resevior more then intended and is the cause of the pressure build up?

Yes. It doesn't allow the diaphram in the cap to move as much as it needs.

Finger over the oepning of the champagne bottle at the end of forumla 1 type of situation....
