Angry 2002 4.7L Oil Pan Removal

I'm trying to replace the rear main seal and my Haynes manual says to remove the oil pan. Anyone know if this is absolutely necessary for the Ram 2002 4.7L?

Regards,
Shudbe

Set the Haynes to the side and click on the links below in my signature to download the service manual for your truck and go from there. On all the Olds engines I worked on the pan had to be dropped.
