Help! 2003 Dodge Ram CV Joint Problems
2003 Ram 1500
I had to replace my front drivers side CV joint and now the new one wont stay on. I knocked it on until it locked but now when I reach 60 + mph it comes off. I have been told that there should have been a lock ring but the new one didnt have it and no parts stores can get it. I even went to local dodge dealership and they said they couldnt get one. Any ideas? If someone knows where I can get this clip or a picture of it so I can see what I am looking for would be great.

You may have been given the CV joint for the '07+ coil over trucks. We had this issue when replacing one on a friends '05 Ram. The '07+ CVs are slightly smaller in diameter and we couldn't get the damn thing to stay in no matter what we did. Funny thing is the '06 is coil over, but retains the same CV axle as the '02-'05 torsion front trucks???
Took it back to the parts guy at the dealer and he was clueless but made some calls. He found out about the size difference (but it had the same part # according to him). Got the right one for us and it snapped right in.
Worth checking into.
But yeah, assuming you have the right CV, dealer should show the part for the clip. Problem is, most of these parts guys are clueless. I had my transfer case linkage fall right off on my truck due to failed bushings. I needed the bushings to put it back on and my local dealership's parts guy told me the ONLY way I could get them was to purchase the entire transfer case shift assembly (shifter, linkage, etc.) for almost $400!!! I had to research it myself and give him his own damn part numbers and was then able to buy just the bushings for $8!!!

I have been trying to find this part but no one has it. I have talked to several guys that I trust completely but they say they cant get it. Does anyone know what this clip actually is called? I figured it was more of an O ring instead of a clip that actually goes inside the cv joint. Ive never messed with these cv joints before. Guess Ive just been lucky.
Man how long did you run with the bad cv joint? I let mine go awhile and the vibration destroyed the splines on the stub shafts in the front diff. Could be your problem

I was able to find the clip. Thanks for everyones help. No I have a different issue. The splines on the stub shaft coming out of the differential are trashed. I guess something had to give with the cv joint popping off. Does anyone know what this shaft is called or better yet where I can get one and how much of a pain this is going to be to change.
