05 3500 steering wander
I did not have the death wobble but close to it after a bump. What I DID have was very poor steering with an incredible amount of wander on the road. 2005 3500 4x4 quad cab 40,000 miles is what I have. Almost all, highway miles. No off road no beating on the truck.
I took it to dodge dealership. They replaced the the steering drag link with the new 08+ pieces. some help but no fix.
What was introduced was a SEVERE clunk like if a metal bar snapped type clunk into my front end.
The clunk pop never reproduced in front of the dealers prescence...I was told don't worry 'bout it. Took it back 3 times no help
They said front end was perfect, rock solid.
The truck felt very unsafe so I did in succession:
1)Borgeson steering shaft....a joke waste of money no help
2)09+ steering box great but no help
3)DYNA TRAC Free spin kit with Dynatrac ball joints and spicer front diff axel ujoints with dyna-lock hubs...tightened the steering a tremendous amount almost no wander. better than new. old ball joints moved in and out of their sockets by about 1/2 inch. what a change in steering....STILL CLUNK WAS PRESENT.
4)Inspected the track bar bushing and it looked brand new. I pryed them with almost no deflection, but something was still wrong so I ordered and had replaced them with LAZARSMITH.COM ZERO DEFLECTION BUSHINGS along with their bolts and hardware and viola!!! no clunk and the steering was even tighter.
DO NOT LET THE FACTORY TRACKBAR BUSHING FOOL YOU EVEN IF IT LOOKS OR FEEL GOOD.
The $100 spent on those bushing are well worth it since it was the final resolution to the front end problem. No more clunk and the steering was even tighter.
NOW I did do some driving that would of reproduced the clunk but it has not come back.
I also had installed the new TRUE-TRAC lsd for the 9.25 front end while the shop had everything apart for the the dynatrac install.
Ball Joints, track bar bushings, and the Mopar new T-style drag ling assembly should solve any wander on the road at least in my situation.
I did alot of searching in the forums for the clunking and steering wander. alot of owners state they checked the track bar bushing and it looked good. That was the same situation for me but I changed them anyway and what a difference.
I was to the point of not wanting to drive the vehicle beause i felt unsafe with that kind of a clunk.
I am very happy with the two shops that worked on the truck as they do great work.
i hope my post can help someone
Thanks
ARTY
