Default RTV - what kind for Diffs?

Noticed today there was some regular RTV and then some red RTV for high temps. Which kind do I use to reseal my differential covers?

I just did my diffs and it was a huge PITA using RTV. I had to do the rear THREE times because it kept leaking despite following the directions to the letter.

Seeing as how a diff will not see extreme tempatures, the high heat versions may be overkill. I have used Black and Red versions without any hassle. The grey gave me leaking issues.

The third time i simply bought the rubber gasket for $4.00 at AutoZone and used a very small amount of black RTV to hold it in place and it finally did the trick. Just follow the directions on the tube. As cheap as the gaskets are, i will never do this again without one.

Sounds good. I guess I was under the impression there were no gaskets available for our trucks.

The dealer told me the same thing. But Fel Pro makes them and if you look on ebay, their are TONS for sale from different companies and styles.

Do they make them for the front and the back? I'm trying to lookup by vehicle on advanceauto.com and see the felpro but it appears to only be for the rear. Don't suppose anyone has any part numbers or suggestions for getting the right ones?

Never used a gasket myself. They swell up and eventually leak.
I swear by Permatex 1-Minute gasket maker. it's in an aerosol type can and although it doesn't look like much and costs alot, it'll do a number of diff gaskets!
It's a seal and pour/drive RTV where as other RTV's need to dry tack and set for up to 2-3hours before you can pour and drive. I've used it on intake gaskets, diffs, transmissions, oil pans, t-stats and never ever had a leak!
