newbie in need of advice..
Did he say he undid whatever it was he did? If he used a tuner and modified the settings on the truck, a superchips is not going to work for you. Superchips will not load a custom tune to your truck unless it downloads and verifies the current settings as stock.
Sounds like you got a good price, at least. Unless you know for sure that it was tuned and left that way, you won't know if the superchips is any good or not, for you, until you try it. I think I had a 3865 or something like that. It won't hurt anything to plug it in but, if the settings are not stock, it's likely going to fail somewhere in the process. Superchips support might try and help you out, if they can, don't know.
I bought a SC tuner in the $300 - $400 range and found I couldn't use it on mine, and my truck has never been tuned that I know of. But, the SC didn't think it was stock and so it wouldn't load a tune. I gave up on it and sold it.

I got almost all my money back.
I like the sound of my gibsons but i didnt want anything too loud. I wanted a nice tuned tone that growls a little when i gas it. Thats what i got. Install was easy but i was let down by the design because i ended up with one of the pipes butting up against my spare tire. Contacted gibson and they said they had only tested it on a ram with 17 inch rims on it. I wrapped the pipe with exhaust wrap and that kept things cool enough. But i recently discovered that, over time, the tire rubbed a hole in the wrap and i got a nice sized chunk of rubber burned off the outside edge of the tread. Rewrapped it but now i will have to check it now and then. I bought the sport side dual exit because their dual rear exit said the spare would be an issue. Turns out it didnt matter. If i had it to do over, i would probably just buy a muffler and get a shop to custom fit the pipes around the spare to a dual rear exit with some nice tips on the ends.

"is it also true that if you drill some holes in the bottom of the stock air intake that it can give you the same effect as a cai? doesn't sound right to me."
........
Ok, now I tell myself, there's no such thing as a stupid question! There's no such thing as a stupid question! Let's think about the intake setup and why you have an AIR FILTER in any engine in the first place!
Firstly, no, it wont act like a CAI. Second, you already drilled the holes didn't you? The bottom side of the filter housing bolts directly onto the throttle body housing. The filter sits above the holes you drilled, thus taking dirt and debris and letting your expensive engine suck it in. I'd hate to do an oil sample on that truck!
