help with front diff.
I havent posted much cuz i usually can find the info i need first. I have a 2002 1500 5.9 4x4 and need help removing the passenger side intermediate shaft. I have searched and have found lots of info but not exactly what i need. I need to know the size of the hex bolt that holds in the spider gear pin.
I have tried everything to just pull out the intermediate shaft without going into the diff but nothing has worked and I dont have a welder to attatch a slide hammer directly to it. For being something designed to pop out using dodges slide hammer thing, it sure is stuck in there pretty good.
Oh and my truck does not have the vacuum engage thing.
thanks for your help, the info on here can really help a guy out.

There is a clip on the inside of the differential that has to be "popped" to let the shaft loose. Once you have that big a$$ 35mm nut off, pop the outside of the shaft with a small sledge - inward toward the differential. It should move in about half an inch or so which lets you know the clip popped loose and then you can put a pry bar up inside the A-arm and wedge the thing out...
That sounds exactly like what I did to remove the CV axle. sorry if I didn't explain it very well. the CV is out and now I need to remove the inner axle dodge calls it an intermediate axle. The splines at the CV were worn so I had no four wheel drive. Thanks for your reply though!
Am I right in thinking that the clip you were talking about on the outer end of the intermediate axle that the CV attatches to, is basically the same thing on the inside of the differential that needs to be "popped" in order to remove the intermediate axle?
So my thinking is essentially the intermediate axle has two clips on it... one holds the CV joint, and the other holds the differential.... right?

demert,
I had the same problem with my 2005 Ram 1500. I just replaced my intermediate shaft on the passenger side yesterday. Went through alot of unnessary trouble of going into the diffarental. Its not needed. the shaft is made to pop out. I took a large pair of vice grip plyers and attached them to the the shaft as tight as i could get them. then i took a hammer and beat out on the plyers. the shaft came out after just a few hits.i hope this helped
