Right, I wasn't talking about the fuel stabilizer. I was talking about the new ethanol treatment stabil is advertising now. I'll check out claims, formulas, and pricing and see what gives.

The 2008+ 4.7 has a compression ratio of 9.8:1, yet nowhere in the manual have I seen a reference to 89 even being recommended. I spent last weekend driving from California back to Texas, and I noted a huge fluctuation in octanes along the way. Some stations sold regular as low as 82, and there were some where premium was only 87. Might it be safe to assume that the lower octanes of fuel are sold where elevations are higher, and the octane can safely be lower and still avoid pre-detonation? Not having payed much attention before now, I had always figured octanes were pretty much the same nationwide. Then I noticed that even around where I live, there are plenty stations that sell 91 as premium, instead of 93. I'm gonna have to watch for that since my truck is tuned to 93. What's funny though, is that no matter where I was, the prices were about the same for each "grade" of fuel, regardless of octane.

**edit**
While I'm making assumptions, I would also think it's safe to run 87 in the Hemi if you are also running the 87 SC tune. I can't imagine them creating a tune that would harm the engine with pre-detonation.

Is this the one, Greg?

And is this the Star-Tron, Hammer?

I, too, have always used 87 though I cannot claim not to have read Hammer's warnings in the past. Having read the warnings, I still thought I was ok because I never heard or felt any evidence of pre-det.

Gives me pause to read that pre-det may be happening even at a level where I cannot hear it. I seem to be in the club for all of the other problems with '03 Hemis -- valve springs, power seat motor gears, hopefully the LSD clips will not be an issue when I get to check it this w/end -- I do not need another one.

Bronco, that doesn't look like what I've been seeing on TV. They've just started advertising it and it appears to have more of an orange or red tint to it. I'm a Barrett-Jackson junky and it's live on SPEED again from now through the weekend and I saw the commercial twice last night. Tune in tonight and you are bound to see it. It supposedly has some cleaning agents in it as well as the ethanol and water treatment.

It looks like it does about what Star Tron does, but at $5+ a bottle that only treats 25 gallons, it's a bit too steep for me. I'll stick with my $8 bottle of Star Tron that treats 128 gallons of gas...

Found the Star Tron tonight at Wally World. Looked for the stabil but they only had the marine formula. The new stuff hasn't shown up around here yet. But I figured it would be more expensive. Using one of stabil's bottles with the squeeze applicator might be a good idea to use to xfer the star tron into for easy measuring and pouring, though.

I looked but didn't see this at my local Walmart on the shelf. It is listed on-line.
