Very basic question but I think the garage I am gonig to isn't checking them right or is just trying to screw me. They initially told me I only need upper on both sides, then I took it in to do the work and they said it needs upper and lower. How can I check each of these myself. The truck is an '04 2500 Quadcab, hemi 5.7. I tried searching the forum but all I found was how to replace, not how to check each of them.

Put a jack under the front on the crossmember or frame of the truck and lift the tires a couple inches off the ground. Get a long metal bar stick under the front tire and pry up on the tire looking at the ball joints as you pry up and down for any play. I am sure they have some videos on youtube on how to check..
