Default Ram 2500 Transfer Case grinding

I have a 2004 Ram 2500 4WD that has started making a grinding noise that is getting worse. It feels like the noise is originating out of the transfer case as I can feel the vibration very well through the shift lever for putting into 4WD range, Any thoughts on overhauling/replacing this unit?

Thanks in Advance
Bill

Have you checked the fluid level in the transfer case? Any signs of leaks? Any evidience of an issue the last time you changed the transfer case fluid?

Yes, checked fluid level and had fluid coming out of filler plug. Oil is not the issue. The truck is new to me and is the first Chrysler product I have ever owned. Not looking to0 promising. I have resigned myself to replacing the unit and I am now trying to figure out the best way to go. Should I buy OEM or should I try and find an upgraded unit?

Whatever rout you take, aftermarket vs oem, download the service manual in weedahoe's sig. It has a step by step with pics on removal and replacement.

Thanks Dudeman, checked it out. Would still like some advice on what route to go for the transfer case issue though.

OK...I guess since I felt the vibration through the selector lever I assumed it was the transfer case. I drained the oil tonight and it was pretty clean with no grindings or debris. I got the front axle in the air and noticed the the front drive shaft double u-joint was loose. Sure enough, it was the u-joints and NOT the transfer case. Now I just have to figure out if I want to tackle the u-joint job or let someone else do it. I always seem to get one needle out of place when pressing on the final cap....LOL
