Default Transfer Case Issues need help

today the grommet on my trasfercase linkage gave out on my, I gather a common problem. I have manually put it back into 2wd( 2nd position from front of truck right?) but the 4wd ligh on dash will not go out unless it is fully forward. I can select neutral (light still on) and both 4x4 modes I belive. It seems like it is now stuck onm 4x4, I have marked the driveshaft to the front wheels and it rotates regardless of shifter position. I recently inherited teh truck and am not familiar with it. Any help would be greatly appriciated

Yep it's a common issue. Had the same happen to me, but when I crawled under and put it in 2WD my light went right out. Make sure the shifter on the transfer case is securely in the 2WD position. You can also slowly reverse the truck a few feet and then pull forward, this usually gets the sensor to recognize it's back in 2WD position.

Thanks for the reply, tried it a few times then did a little burn out on some wet grass(lessen impact) to see which tires would spin. New problem now. I have replaced the grommets on the linkage and shifted through all gears, and comr to find the only time the 4ws light goes off is in the 4w hi position. I know I am getting proper gear selection, when in neutral no drive. Any ideas? Might head down to the dealership to see what they think.

Since it's a mechanical transfer case it sounds like it's shifting fine, but there is a position sensor that basically just makes the indicator light work. Sounds like that sensor is having issues...
