Tapping Sound from Engine
Whats up guys, I put a K &N series 77 CAI on a few weeks ago on my 07 Hemi. Since then I have noticed a tapping sound when the motor get under strain (low gear going up hill). I called K&N and the guy told me it was normal and coming from the TB and since it was a metal tube that was why I am hearing it now and wasn't before. Has anybody heard of anything like this or is there anyway to fix it without changing the CAI. Thanks.
The Hemi hat you had on there acted as a sound barrier of sorts.now that you replaced it with a tube shaped " Megaphone " everything coming out of your engines throttle body will be amplified. I.E. The EGR valve and or the MDS kicking on.
Since when does a Hemi "strain" goin up hill?lol

Well thats what the guy at K&N said. I didnt mean strain (hahaha) just when the when the truck is in high gear and rpms low you can here it.The truck runs great no problems anywhere else (not that its a problem). Just wanted to ask to make sure.........
When I 1st put on my home brew CAI I noticed a "click" that coincided w/ the mds kicking in every once in a while.
If you have MDS (which I assume you do) put the truck in tow/haul or OD/OFF and see if it still does tap.
If you still hear the "tapping" then check for clearance issues in the engine compartment w/ the CAI install.

Tapping sound when under presure going up a hill with the Hemi engine and a tuner....SOunds like detonation to me. Yes there are knock sensors, but that doesnt mean there is no detionation happening.
I'd use the highest grade gasoline until the old stuff is filtered out and see if your problem goes away. It's a cheap easy diagnosis. Cost of Premium is a few bucks per fill. I personally think of it as cheap insurance and a guarantee I have good gas because when gas sits in your tank for longer than 2 weeks, it goes bad with the amount of ehtanol is in the blend nowadays, not including the time it stayed in the ground at the pump station.
I think you have been listening very closely to the sound of your intake and just noticed something that has been happening already. Also, I do have a slight ticking sound when going up hills and lugging the motor, it is the exhaust on my truck. It could be the same as on yours, but higher octane is worth a shot to make sure you have no detonation going on.

It's not a bad lifter, it's not pre-detonation. All you're hearing is the EGR valve opening and closing, it used to be muffled by the "Hemi Hat", it's always been there you just weren't hearing it. The plastic tube intakes don't resonate it but you can hear it, the metal tube ones act like a megaphone.
