Another rear end question
I have an 2008 ram TRX 2 wheel drive with the 4.7L with 3.55 rear end.
I just purchased a travel trailer and I pulled it back from Ohio to TN last weekend.
The trailer weighed 5400 lbs empty.
My ram did very well considering the size of the trailer.
My top speed going up the hills was around 60-65 mph and I got around 10 mpg.
Would I benefitfrom putting 3.91(?) gears in my truck?
Any input or experience would be appreciated.
Thanks
Brian

Imo yes you would..i had a 05 1500 with 3.92 gears in it and i freaken loved it..i i have a 02 1500 with 3.55 in it and im goin to be hauling a trailer in the next few day and i know my mpg is gonna go way down
Better gears would help. If you are going to do frequent towing, I would consider going higher. The weight starts increasing rapidly as you add fuel, water and personal belongings. Then you may put additional stuff in the bed. You may actually gain some mpgs. Also you may think about rated tires and a trans cooler if you do not have one already. Happy camping.
Thanks! I was thinking of letting the dealer install the gears. I haven't check on a price yet. Any ideas what I should look for in an upgrade? I am not looking for anything fancy as this is only a 2 wheel drive truck.
I have an 03 with 3.92's stock and upgraded to 4.56. Problem is, it's not an oem gear so I think you can go 3.92 or even 4.10? Maybe the 4.10's are for the HD trucks. the 3.92's will help, but you *may* find a shop that is good at installing gears and you can get a set of Motive 4.56's and have them installed. I 've heard some having 4.56 gears installed for $600-$800. That would be well worth it if you're going to get it done at all. Even at highway, it just feels a lot better, accelerates better. So you're running a higher RPM at highway speeds but more the point is that the engine is actually working less to get up to and maintain that speed.
