Default oil change question

i have a friend who obtained a 6 ram 1500 from a relative who hadnt changed the oil for an est. 30000 miles. he says the oil was last changed with synthetic. i was telling him that if he changed the oil now that the new synthetic would breakup the sludge that is probably built up and then clog the oil pump which would then blow the engine. any thoughts? thanks.

Just my opinion but I'd pull the cover and see if it has build up on the top, that's where it's usually found, the clumps stay up high. Then if is you can pull the pan, set the covers back on and pour fuel on top and let it drain in a pan below. That's all cheap insurance IMO. You could also drain it and use a non synthetic, and use another type of oil cleaning treatment. There's a few things you can do bit needs changed.

On a side note I have my grandpa's old '93 Isuzu for work, last known oil change was 3years ago for sure, maybe longer. I havent even checked the oil in over a year lol. Now my Dodge gets synthetic every 5,000 but this old truck not so much. Now I feel if I change with new clean oil it may blow up lol.

Drain the oil and add one qt of atf then the rest normal oil. Let it idle for 20min and most of the sludge should drain out. Atf is a detergent and should clean the engine out that way. Just don't rev the engine!

Wouldn't adding sea foam to the crankcase do the same?
