2012 5.7 hemi install in a 2003 ram 2500
I need help with wifes truck. This is my first dodge period and don't know much about anything with this truck.
Ok, my question is can I put a 2012 5.7 hemi in my wifes 2003 ram 2500 that has a 5.7 hemi? It broke a intake valve spring and dropped valve in engine. It scored up the cylinder pretty good.
I have read that the new engine has varible timing but is that computer controlled or what? I read it was done by oil pressure.
Please help!!!

Yep, I don't think it'd be financially feasible unless you had the whole 2012 truck as a donor and then it'd still be a headache and a half.
I'm going through similar with my daily driver - a 4.7 HO Grand Cherokee. The '03 Hemi had weak valve springs which were replaced with much stronger ones in '04. The '99-'02 3.7 V6 and 4.7 V8 were prone to dropping poorly pressed on valve seats - which basically gave the same result as your broken spring.
In my case, the cylinder wall was fine, one barely detectable scratch. So I found a total over-haul kit with EVERYTHING, even 8 new pistons for under $700. Getting the heads rebuilt is gonna cost me another $380.
What about boring out all the walls just big enough to take care of the scoring and going with a rebuild kit with over-sized pistons? Surely can't be more than an engine swap and I'd rather have a rebuild with all new parts than stick an engine in with as many miles or more than the one I was replacing.
I've got a very good source for these total over-haul kits. All DNJ & TCI parts. Shoot me a PM if you want a link or their number to call...

Everything outside of the short block is pretty much different. The heads are similar to 6.1 heads, slightly smaller valves but same size ports. The intake manifold is designed to shift between long and short runners, in addition to VVT and MDS (all controlled by the PCM). You technically COULD drop the long block in, but you would need a different intake manifold, which would necessitate altering your front timing cover, which means you need to get rid of your clutch fan for electric, then custom exhaust, then custom tuning, then.....it keeps snowballing. I recommend finding another 03-05 hemi and dropping that in. If you find an 04-05 engine you'll have to plug the EGR. I think you also have to change TB's to make it work right with your 03, but otherwise it's drop in, plug and play.
BTW if you actually have that 2012 engine, I'd love to get the cylinder heads....

ok, thanks for the info. I'll prolly just get a long block 5.7 hemi. The engine has 117k on it so i'd rather go with all new/rebuild with warranty. I found some for around 1500 bucks and 500 core charge. The head also got messed up so I think I'll come out better with rebuild engine than trying to rebuild this one.
If you can find a Hemi that will drop in for $1500 then JUMP ON IT! Last I tried to help someone find one locally best we could find had 140k on it and they still wanted over $3300 for the thing...
I really don't have the choice you do, ain't a such thing as an '02 4.7 HO out there ANYWHERE so I gotta rebuild. Thank goodness my block is fine. I read somewhere that there were 170 regular 4.7s came off the line for every one HO...

I'm with Lonestar weed , and Hammer. Upgrade to a 04' or 05'.. If you can find one resonably priced.. All you have to do is get the wiring harness and pcm with the motor , for that motor , from the headlights to the dash.. That will get rid of the tcm and open tuning options that you don't have on a 03' Hemi..
If you do find an '03, plan a spring swap so you won't go through it again (some VERY early '04s also used the weak valve springs). Use the newer 5.7 springs or better yet the 6.1 springs which are even stronger. Manley's are also good but pricey. Stay clear of the Comp Beehives, been hearing of them breaking too...
