yea..i've been looking into the 545RFE for the hemi..It locks out 5th gear, bumps your shift points to 3500 RPM, and puts the shift point from 3rd to 4th gears at 4000 or 4500 RPM i think.

ORIGINAL: muddauber5.7

Jcarp if you knew you going to tow 8500lbs. why didn't you at least buy your truck with the 4.7 V8,I know the 3.7 is a good motor but if your going through mountains that will be a lot of strain on that motor over time. I have the hemi which is no problem in fourth gear.

hahaha....dude...i dont think that he has the 3.7l motor.....i think you misunderstood. He prob has the hemi but was just talking about it would be nicer to select the gear he wants.

I doubt very highly that the v-6 in the ram could pull 8500lbs. the v6 barely can pull the truck itself. waste of a motor in a truck that weighs anywhere from 4800lbs to 5600lbs.

Just to clear up my truck. It is a 2004 5.7L 4X4 with 3.92 diffs. If I would have known I was going to be towing like I do now I would have got a 2500/3500 and a diesel.

My Truck is a new 2005 Dodge 1500 single cab, short bed, with a 3.7 V6 Engine, 4 Speed Auto Transmision. I tow a small trailer less than 2000 lbs. I bought the truck for gas mileage and it is great. Without the trailer I get 20mpg... With the trailer 15 to 16 mpg. I only see a problem on very hilly freeways, were the road constantly goes up and down. The tranny down-shifts late & I already lost momentum and it then has to shift to 2nd! This is in the Tow/Haul mode. Leaving it in 3rd would work much better.. I do not like the tranny shifting back and forth at the wrong times on hilly roads... I was very surprised to see a 4 speed tranny without the capability to leave it in 3rd. I would appreciate it if a Tranny man from Dodge would be able to answer the question or have a way they could modify the tranny to be able to select and leave it in 3rd. I would be willing to pay the dealer for the modification. I called Dodge and they said sorry. I called the dealer and they also that I should be able to leave it in third... O'well I love the Truck! Mileage is great, Looks are great.... This is my third dodge truck...! ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!

I am renewing this one since I just left the dealer and I have the same problem and the dealer will not do anything. All of us should email dodge. I already did today. We shouldnt have to settle for this. I bought my truck with a tow package and 3.92 gears for a reason. I planned to buy a camper in the future, but there is no way this truck could handle a camper within its tow rating, I think the tranny would fail shortly.
Please take a few minutes and let dodge know about this problem, the truck needs a manual 3rd gear selector!
