Default 2 Many codes!!

Truck CEL came on about 2 weeks ago so I let her sit until I had time to check out. Truck idle would surge from time to time and it would stall while driving and while sitting at stop sign. Fire right back up when i started it. After extensive reading here I went with the hunch it was the EGR as that seemed fairly common issue and the symptoms were similar to mine.

Long story short I replaced EGR , new air filter, took the throttle body off and cleaned it as it was pretty dirty. Used Dodge brake cleaner and a rag and stayed clear of any sensors. Put it back together, reconnected battery and fired it up. Rpm's bounced around a bit then settled down. Idiot light was gone then it returned along with same type of symptoms Idle surge (Not as pronounced as before) and while driving today at around 1000 rpm it surged up to 1800 or so and down to 500 then back to a 1000.

Went to Part source had them scan and it pulled every code known to man PO 138,158,171 and 172?? The thing I find weird is PO171 = System Too Lean (Bank 1) and PO172 = System Too Rich (Bank 1) How the hell can that be. Rich and lean? When I installed new EGR I never had PCM reflashed but a suspect the PCM is shot. Anyone want to chime in on that beauty? Its intermittent it seems to get worse as vehicle warms up, so I don't think it s a broken value spring, but I am no mechanic. Truck does not stall anymore (Yet)but its weird deal. I don;t see how all my sensors go Oingo Boingo all at once. Could Catalytic converter cause this jazz. I hate computers on car's. I'm old school, Is there spark , air, gas Cool!! Let's roll. This thing make me drink more Canadian beer then I should. Sorry about the novel.

those are all o2 codes. look around them for any broken or chaffed wires. if the wires seem fine try changing out the o2 sensors anything but bosch.

Just becauise you have two codes that might be contradictory doesnt mean they were logged at the same time as they are just "stored" codes from events that happened once upon a time

Ok That is an excellent point. So I had the codes removed at Part Source when I had it scanned. So the I-dot(CIL) light is on once again I should get it scanned a second time and see what comes up now? I' am pretty sure those codes are together still but that should tell me. If the PCM throws them again "Sumtin is up"!! I personally think the PCM is a few sandwiches short of a picnic for some reason. Hoping 4 O2 sensors , I looked at them today and pretty ancient civilization lookin to me. Go's to my mechanic tomorrow, see what he says. Doah!!

Ok here is the latest. Reset the PCM and fired her up and idles was bat**** crazy, stalled twice so i said screw it. Got up today 58 F and it starts up and then idles at 7oo rpm no idiot light. Drive to work and notice its rough at the light with the brake applied but at least idling decent at the house.

Park the truck come back half an hour later to take to garage and hit a speed bump in parking lot and idiot light is back (Not sure of that was coinsedence or not) then I turn onto the main drag in town and the idle go's bat**** again real bad, surges up then dies, surge then dies. New thing here is lighting bolt symbol was now flashing on the dash.

I started it 14 times and then gave er poop before it stalled. left a nice Blackie on the road and off we went made it to the garage. Leaning more and more towards a new TB. I cleaned it but I think the throttle postion sensor is out to lunch. whats everyone think of this new development?

So by chance, what have you done mechanically or electrically to resolve the codes? Resetting the PCM does not resolve them, it just resets them.

Your "idiot" light is coming on for a reason and is trying to tell you something. I think once you resolve your codes permanent, truck will run better and thank you

I get codes on my truck when the battery goes below starting threshold. Matter of fact, I need to go out and clear them because my batery died last week and I never cleared the codes.

What year truck, what engine...Details please so we can better assist! You should go to your garage and update your profile so it shows all that info in top right corner of all your posts!

Ok mechanic called and vacuum leak at the manifold where the EGR pipe connects. Said there is a rubber gasket that is missing. Doubt that is the whole issue as it never had one there when I took it apart. He said they got the idle to get all wonky by moving the pipe around. so we will fix this. He also said one of the O2 sensors is deffinately baked and the other one;s are throwing werird signal's, so I will have that one done and then see what occurs.

I'm having egr codes flashing constantly! Says it's running lean and probs with o2 sensors. I've had both lower o2 sensors replaced (one twice within a month or so). Still flashing codes. There is an egr recall issue but they state that it's only a code update issue. And get this.. I have a 2007 1500 quad cab 4x4 and have already had to have the long block replaced!!! I was driving to work and everything was good, NO check engine light NO warning like "check gauges" and suddenly red flashing check gauges and check engine light kicks on and the engine ceases up! Got the long block replaced ( which was covered by waranty, thank God) and now nothing but check engine light constantly. It's now out of it's warantee. ( They are talking pcm issues and I have to take it in Monday to confirm. This is my only vehicle and I have to commute to work. The tags are past due because I can't pass emissions. The front shocks are bad also. I LOVE my truck! I've had Chevy and Ford and the body and inside (like the quality of the dash etc) of my truck are the best... but really??? I'm frustrated ( I can't afford a new pcm or a new truck.

The latest is code PO132 (bank 1 sensor 1) or front driver's side sensor I believe. Had rear driver's side replaced truck is better but still is running a touch rough. I will do this one next and i bet that the end of it. (I hope) New plugs and wires three years ago according to mechanic. Champ plugs + stock wires.
