Default Newbi with a Head Gasket questions

Hey all, I'm replacing the head gaskets on my fathers 02' Dodge Ram 1500. First of all, when removing the actual head itself. My plan is to remove all head bolts and the bolts that hold the timing chain gear to the cam.

Once I have those removed can I just lift the head straight up and off making sure not to hit the valves on the way out? (I already have the manifold as well as the other parts off that allow me to remove the head)

My plan is to not remove the cam. I have all timing chains and gears marked as well as cam and cam retaining cap. My concern is that I read, I should have valve spring compressor tool. I hope this wasn't to confusing. any insight would be greatly appreciated.

FYI, I found the web site howstuffinmycarworks.com and has a complete breakdown to do the job on the 4.7. With PICS! It's just I'm a bit confused by this one section and thought I would give this a try for some advice. Again any info would be great.

Greg

PS also need torque specs for putting the head back on

Welcome.

You can download a copy of your Srvc Man from the links in my signature. Not only will they provide step by step but also torque speaks you asked for.

Keep an eye on your timing marks and zip tie the timing chain to the timing sprocket/gear bu the cam on the head will have to come off/out

We have a How To on the 4.7 in our FAQs (again, check the link in mt sig) but I think its the same one you have already but check anyway.

ditto on ziptieing the sprocket to the timing chain. Keeps everything guess free.
You do not need to remove the valves to replace a headgasket. And they are tougher than you think as for a minor bump on the way out. Just don't drop the head and you'll be fine..lol

Good time to change out all the coolant and T-stat as well.

& DirtyDog, Really sorry for the delay. I'm on AOL and had ongoing issues getting logged in, it kept going back to the same page. Anyway, thanks for the help. It's greatly appreciated. Any other advice you or anyone else might pass on would really help. Even if you think it isn't very important, I would still love to hear it. Going with Fel-Pro Gaqsket set new head bolts, water pump and thermostat. Any experience passed on would be great. Thanks again weedahoe and DirtyDog.
