"Hemi hat" confusion
Hey guys. I just recently bought a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7. I have ordered a volant cold air intake and am pretty pumped bout it. My only question is that the cold air intake hooks up to the "Hemi hat" and not directly to the throttle body. I asked Volant as to why they did this and they said they got a better torque rating. This confuses me since i have read on here that the hemi hat is very constrictive. Is volant telling the truth or should i rig it to the throttle body instead and get rid of the hemi hat?
Restricting the air flow will give better torque numbers in the extreme low rpm range because the engine must work harder to "breath" at low rpm. A harder working engine will naturally produce more torque. Although when you free up the air flow peak torque will be higher - but it moves up the rpm band slightly.
IMO the goal should be to make the load lighter on the engine. If more low end torque is desirable, then there are a number of ways to achieve it without restricting the air flow...

Either cut it open from the bottom, gut it, and reassemble... Or find a way to plug the 2 holes in the main "tube" that goes through the hat. Or maybe pop holes in the bottoms of the 2 baffle Chambers and fill with spray foam?
