Definitely dont have to remove the axle, just pound the old one out, and they may have a special tool that looks like a lug nut with a spacer on it to pull the new stud in by tightening it ( thats what I have). BTW, I own a repair shop and have been repairing cars for over 20 years.
A good mechanic can do this in about 15-20 minutes...

You may be right but from what I saw when I looked at it you have to pull the axle. The front would be a different story- remove wheel/caliper/rotor and bam 5 studs are exposed but on the back there was no room or opening to push them out. The owner said they have to pull the axle and they will have to give me a ride to work cause it's a 2 hour job. Who knows I just want my truck the way it was.

Scary. Id ask them to pay for the repairs elsewhere since they botched it in the first place. Nice they offered to handle it and give you a ride though. You don't get that much nowadays.

I definitely understand the feeling that you don't want them to touch your truck again, but I try to give places a chance to make it right. If they seem competent and like it was just a mistake, consider giving them another chance.

Yeah I guess, lug turners are probably high school kids hence the stud. Hopefully their mechanic is decent.

I would most definately have them all replaced. I think you paying for the unbroken studs and they cover their own labor installing them, that is legitimate. Just because the others didn't break, does not mean they didn't get stretched and slightly stressed!!

So the end of this story is the stud got replaced by the shop. They are either cheap or just uneducated because there was maybe half a quart of 75-140 in my diff after the job. They were closing when I got there and I had to show the guys what I needed and fill my diff myself in the parking lot. I am going to look into replacing them all at some point.
