Default power steering fiasco

03 ram 1500 4x4. Going on its third pump. Replaced the last pump in 09. It was an alum zf pump. I went to my not so trusty local auto parts chains where they informed me that I can no longer get an aluminum pump and would have to replace it with a cast iron (ford). Tried auto zone, pep boys, advanced and our local guy and they all told me the same thing. I get the new cast iron pump/pulley/res. Instructions say I need to swap the fitting from old pump to new. Old fitting is too big and does not fit but the line on the truck does fit in the new style fitting. So I install it and flush a gallon of atf4 through the system. Turned the wheel 40 times per factory manual. Now the issue im having is that the pump works good, nice and quiet till I get past 2000 rpm then it howls like a banshee. Im worried that this new style pump may not work with my truck. Ive searched the forums, stickies, youtube, google. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

did you change the belt and tensioner when you changed the pump?

If not then what is likely happening is the belt is stretching under load and not driving the pump enough.

Might have been why you went through two pumps before this one too.

I did a power steering flush last year on my OeM one and it failed right after. I went through 2 pumps from Napa after that, 1 failed the day after I bought it. I went and got an original from a junk yard and have not had any problems with my power steering since.

Installed a brand new belt both times. Going to get another pump today and swap that out.
