Default Plowing question.

Im from New England, and I might have the opertunity to plow this season. I was wondering what everyone thought. I dont know the capabilities and if its smart. If i do it its going to be for the city and not just a few drivways here and there.

I have a 2002 dodge ram 1500 quad cab 4x4. I was wondering if it is capable of handleing the plow. I dont see why it wouldnt but i also have heard a few horror stories. I was told the frame isnt as strong and as the 2500, i wasa told from a fellow employee who plows with his diesel ram, that his buddie twisted his frame from plowing with his 1500.

Any help would be very appreciated.....

Thanks in advance.

Plowing with the 1500 is not encouraged and actually has warnings against doing so in the owner's manual. If feasible, upgrade to a 2500 Cummins 4x4 model if you are truly serious about plowing this winter.

Read your Owner's Manual. If it is like my '05's it has a section devoted to this topic and specifically says NOT TO with any 1500 series, only the 2500 and 3500.

Of course, your older truck may have been different, that's why it too had a manual at one time. If you no longer have it, a quick search on google will give you vendors to replace it. I think a manual is a necessity for everything, especially vehicles.

All the best.

I asked the dealer when I bought my 05. The service guy said there is an upgrade to the 1500 to handle a plow. 1/2 ton running gear really doesn't handle a plow well though.

Big difference between the 1500 is IFS and 25/3500 are solid front axles. I worked at a place that plowed with a 1st gen 1500 heavy half, and after the first season of plowing it was impossible to keep the damn truck on the road. If your going to be serious about plowing and making some money at it, upgrade to at least a 2500. The cummins would be awesome, but the hemi will also work just fine.

My Dad in North Dakota does the plowing for his company's lot up in North Dakota...Its a pretty big place, mainly devoted to recycling. They had a 2002 1500 and it didn't do squat for him he said. They just went and used the older Chevy they had and put the 1500 into service for just hauling items around. Now they have a monster 2500 with a new plow as well and last year they cut their time to plow about 10-15%! Good luck..and I miss the snow
