Default Heater core issue

So I have a 02 ram 1500 and for the past year when I use my heat I get a nice syrup smell. I was told that it's the heater core and it needs to be replaced. Luckily it hasn't leaked but I feel like this needs to get done now before it does leak. I have never attempted a job like this and was wondering is it something that a mechanic should do? Or anyone really can? I've already got quoted a price to do it and really don't want to pay that lol. Also when replacing the core is there anything else you should replace at same time? I heard the vent doors I believe?

Please any info would be great! If anyone has a write up and even pics of them doing it that will be GREAT!
