Default Passenger front CV axle + axle stub shaft replacement

Hi

I need to replace passenger side cv axle and axle stub shaft coming from the front diff. The splines for both shafts are completely gone. Truck is a 2005 ram 1500 5.7

The garage would charge me 850$ parts and labor included (3hrs). That's too much and I don't want to waste that money if I could do it myself. I've done simple things on my other cars such as replacing ball joints, brake jobs, calipers and stuff but never actually touched anything related to a drivetrain.

How do I get the axle shaft out of the front diff? I never opened a diff before. Do I simply open the cover and remove it? Do I need special tools to get this job done?

Found this picture on the internet. That's the exact parts that need replacement.

Thanks a lot.

Rock Auto has stub shafts and half shafts. You could probably get everything you need for under $200 bucks????
I never did this job before but from what I remember reading. Once the half shaft (cv axle) is removed.
The stub shaft should pop out. The trick is getting it to come out. There is a clip that holds it in. So as long as the clip comes out with the shaft you should not have to pull the cover. If the clip falls off and is inside the front diff than the front cover has to be removed to retrieve it. The new stub shaft would just pop right back in. You need to confirm this cause like I say I have never done this procedure yet.
Also if that shaft does not want to come out. You will have to get creative. I read people welding chain (etc) to the stub shaft as a way to pry out. Attaching a slide hammer somehow??? is another idea. Make sure to replace axle seal as well.
Good Luck

Undo the track rod end/balljoint, to let the front hub flop over more.
This gives you a little more room, to pull the outboard cv shaft from out of the hub.
You will need a 35mm socket (from memory) to undo the hub nut.
Try using an air impact hammer to get this off easy.

if the 05's are the same as my 07' you shouldn't need to open the front diff at all other than the seal on the passenger side (4 bolts). with that seal off, the shaft that you have pointed out in that picture pops out with a bearing and gear on it. Pop those off the old shaft and put them on the new one and reassemble. Look at page 3-209 of the service manual (i'm looking at the 06' manual), explains how to do everything.
