I've seen them around for some time now. They have the SS metal screen that filters out the oil. How good it works, I have no idea. Another thing to think about is if that screen gets damaged for what ever reason, can you buy a replacement?
Also, will the canister begin to leak over time? I guess the only benefit to this type of oil filter is seeing what is being trapped by the filter. You can do this anyway with a standard filter, just have to cut it open. When I worked at the air strip, during the process of changing the plane's oil, we always cut open the filters and took the media out. We then cut the media out and unfolded it, looking for anything weird such as metal chips/shavings.
