Start UM early.... I started my strat at 3500 miles. just make sure you use the proper weight oil. dodge had a problem with the mds syystem on the hemi thats why they went to a 5w20 oil. If your worried bout your dealer doing tranny and oil, I would bring your own oil and make sure the tranny any shop uses is the proper fluid if its an auto make sure they use atf+4. For oil i would suggest mobil1 and a quality filter.

I have a 2003 ram 5.7 hemi with 43,000 klms Would synthetic oil be a good choice this early in the motors life? Can the dealer be trusted with the quality of their oil and tranny fluids?
Concerned

Did dodge send out a notification I didn't get? Last time I checked my manual for my 04 said 5w/30. I really don't trust the 5w/20 in my hard working engine. Not to mention, shouldn't a 5w/30 oil have about the same characteristics of the 5w/20 except the film strength/thickness when it gets hot? If I HAD to have 5w/20 I still wouldn't use it and would be using a 0w/30 synthetic.

DC recommends 5w/30 for the 2003-2004 Hemi motors. Did they change anything from 2004-2005, I doubt it. The only reason I think they would switch over to 5w/20 was to
1. Reduce production cost, same filler cap as the 300, Magnum, Charger, etc. Also same oil, maybe got a good deal by the tank full?
2. Better MPG running a lighter oil
3. Prepare for switch over to the MDS system for 2006. MDS requires 5w/20.
Even if the new recommended oil is 5w/20, I feel better knowing that the 5w/30 is in the crankcase.
Typical Properties
Mobil 1 5W-30
SAE Grade 5W-30
