2004 Ram 1500 Wandering and Vibration
Just bought the truck. It has a 6" Fabtech lift and 325x65x18 tires. I did have to remove the sway bar links as they were hitting on the front shocks for who knows why. The issue I am having is it's way out of alignment and when I hit bumps, it wanders all over the road. It doesn't seem to feel like a death wobble, just wanders. The question I have, is that the two shops I have brought it to were telling me that the track bar may be bad. I looked underneath while it was on the rack and the tech seems to think the track bar is missing. My truck does not have a steering box, it has rack and pinion. Auto parts stores list a track bar for the 04 1500, but I can't see where it would even go. The shops say they don't want to align it. Should it have a track bar?
No track bar on the 1/2 ton. Check tie rods, make sure the rack isn't leaking. steering stablizer will help some too. Take it too a different shop, tech doesn't know what he's looking at.
that 6" lift is part of your problem... trying to get a 6" lifted truck not to "wander" is a serious task...
Is it a body or suspension lift?
Check your Tie Rod Ends... also removing that sway bar is NOT going to help...

I only unhooked the sway bar because the links were hitting the shocks and making a horrible metal on metal scraping noise. I didn't do it because I thought it would solve the wandering problem lol.... It is a Fabtech 6" suspension lift. Rack is leaking a very little bit. The inner boots are just damp. There is no dripping anywhere etc... Everything seems tight. I think it may just need the alignment. It is very obvious by just looking at it that it has a positive camber issue on both sides. Maybe the caster is off too. The kid I got it from never had it aligned when the lift kit was installed. Both the front tires are very heavily well done (worn) on the outsides. Here is what the shock/sway bar link looks like:
This video shows some potential problems that you might be experiencing...
If you are having the same problem then you might need to get yourself some longer connecting links so it doesn't hit anymore.
Have you tried contacting Fabtech to see if maybe they make what you need?
6" lift is a pretty big lift, and changes a ton of suspension geometry, so you might end up having to custom fabricate some parts.
There are some links in the description of that video that might help you as well.
Let us know what you do to fix it, it might help someone else one day.

Mine doesn't have a steering box with drag link and pitman. It has a rack and pinion. When I turn the wheel back and forth lock to lock, the only thing that hits is the inside of the tire bumps the sway bar when turned too far.
That is an issue....
What are your wheel and tire specs?
oh and definitely get an alignment... that is REQUIRED when you do a lift.
