Diesels tend to get better mileage than a gasser, especially when hauling. I borrowed a diesel Ram on a trip last spring to haul home a load of tractor parts and pieces (very heavy) and I was impressed with it achieving 14mpg through the mountains of Missouri.

This doesn't help, but you should have purchased a diesel.

But I imagine that 1700 to 1800 rpm's in 5th gear would be optimum for flat, empty running, right? If I need higher rpm's, I'll downshift
